Texas DPS - LTC (License to Carry Course)

This course is designed to educate students in guidelines for carrying a handgun as required by the State of Texas.  Students must successfully pass a written test as well as pass a handgun proficiency test at the range.  Students must pass each of these tests with a minimum of a 70% score.

Course cost $80.00

(Please note: Passing the course (written test and pistol proficiency) does not guarantee issuance of an LTC permit.  The student must also submit documents, have finger prints done and pass the state required background check prior to receiving the LTC permit. ) See Eligibility Note Below...

Classroom Outline 
(State Required)
  • Unit 1: Laws that relate to weapons and to the use of deadly force

  • Unit 2: Handgun use and safety, including the use of restraint holsters and methods to ensure the secure carrying of openly carried handguns

  • Unit 3: Non-violent dispute resolution

  • Unit 4: Proper storage practices for handguns with emphasis on storage practices that eliminate the possibility of accidental injury to a child.

Gear Requirements
  • A handgun that is .22 caliber or larger semi-automatic or revolver per state regulations 

  • 50 rounds of ammunition (no reloads)

  • Both eye and ear protection

  • No open toe shoes or high heels during live fire

  • Dress according to weather conditions

Proficiency Test
  • Twenty (20) shots will be fired from 3 yards.

    • Five (5) shots fired in a "One shot exercise" 2 seconds allowed for each shot

    • Ten (10) shots fired in a "Two shot exercise" 3 seconds allowed for each 2 shot sequence

    • Five (5) shots fired in 10 seconds

  • Twenty (20) shots will be fired from 7 yards - fired 5 stages.

    • Five (5) shots will be fired in 10 seconds

    • Five (5) shots will be fired in 2 stages:

      • Two (2) shots will be fired in 4 seconds

      • Three (3) shots will be fired in 6 seconds

    • Five (5) will be fired in a "One shot exercise" 3 seconds allowed for each shot

    • Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds

  • Ten (10) shots fired from 15 yards - fired in two 5-shot strings

    • Five (5) shots fired in two stages:

      • Two (2) shots fired in 6 seconds

      • Three (3) shots fired in 9 seconds

    • Five (5) shots fired in 15 seconds

Texas CHL/LTC Eligibility:

It is not the responsibility of PopPopFirearmsTraining or it's Instructors to determine eligibility of students or persons seeking to obtain a License to Carry (LTC). Review eligibility requirements closely before registering as class fees are NOT refundable.

A person is eligible for a license to carry a concealed handgun if the person:
  • is a legal resident of this state for the six month period preceding the date of application,

  • is at least 21 years of age,

  • has not been convicted of a felony,

  • is not currently charged with the commission of a felony, Class A or Class B misdemeanor, or equivalent offense, or an offense under Sec. 42.01 of the penal Code (Disorderly Conduct) or equivalent offense,

  • is not a fugitive from justice for a felony, Class A or Class B misdemeanor, or equivalent offense,

  • is not a chemically dependant person (a person with two convictions within the ten year period preceding the date of application for offenses (Class B or greater) involving the use of alcohol or a controlled substance is ineligible as a chemically dependant person. Other evidence of chemical dependency may also make an individual ineligible for a CHL),

  • is not incapable of exercizing sound judgement with respect to the proper use and storage of a handgun,

  • has not, in the five years preceding the application, been convicted of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor, or equivalent offense, or an offense under Section 42.01 of the Penal Code (Disorderly Conduct) or equivalent offense,

  • is fully qualified under applicable federal and state law to purchase a handgun,

  • has not been finally determined to be delinquent in making child support administered or collected by the attorney general,

  • has not been finally determined to be delinquent in the payment of a tax or other money collected by the comptroller, state treasurer, tax collector of a policital subdivision, Alcohol Beverage Commission or any other agency or subdivision,

  • is not currently restricted under a court protective order subject to a restraining order affecting a spousal relationship,

  • has not, in the 10 years preceding the date of application, been adjudicated as having engaged in delinquent conduct violating a penal law in the grade of felony,

  • has not made any material misrepresentation, or failed to disclose any material fact, in an application submitted pursuant to Section 411.174 or in a request for application submitted pursuant to Section 411.175.
